چکیده

A new family of Petrov-Galerkin nite element methods on triangular grids is constructed for singularly perturbed elliptic problems in two dimensions. It uses divergence-free trial functions that form a natural generalization of one-dimensional exponential trial functions. This family includes an improved version of the divergence-free nite element method used in the PLTMG code. Numerical results show that the new method is able to compute strikingly accurate solutions on coarse meshes. An analysis of the use of Slotboom variables shows that they are theoretically unsatisfactory and explains why certain Petrov-Galerkin methods lose stability when generalized from one to two dimensions.

Finite Element Methods for Convection Diffusion Equation

This paper deals with the finite element solution of the convection diffusion equation in one and two dimensions. Two main techniques are adopted and compared. The first one includes Petrov-Galerkin based on Lagrangian tensor product elements in conjunction with streamlined upwinding. The second approach represents Bubnov/Petrov-Galerkin schemes based on a new group of exponential elements. It ...

On the natural stabilization of convection diffusion problems using LPIM meshless method

By using the finite element $p$-Version in convection-diffusion problems, we can attain to a stabilized and accurate results. Furthermore, the fundamental of the finite element $p$-Version is augmentation degrees of freedom. Based on the fact that the finite element and the meshless methods have similar concept, it is obvious that many ideas in the finite element can be easily used in the meshl...

Uniformly Convergent Nite Element Methods for Singularly Perturbed Elliptic Boundary Value Problems: Convection-diiusion Type

In this paper we consider the standard bilinear nite element method (FEM) and the corresponding streamline diiusion FEM for the singularly perturbed elliptic boundary value problem ?" (@ 2 u @x 2 + @ 2 u @y 2) ? b(x; y) ru + a (x; y)u = f (x; y) in the two space dimensions. By using the asymptotic expansion method of Vishik and Lyusternik 42] and the technique we used in 25, 26], we prove that ...

Necessary Conditions for Uniform Convergence of Nite Diierence Schemes for Convection-diiusion Problems with Exponential and Parabolic Layers

Singularly perturbed problems of convection-diiusion type are dif-cult to solve using standard numerical methods. This shows that it is desirable to construct robust methods that converge uniformly in the singular perturbation parameter. In this paper we derive new conditions that schemes of this type must satisfy, with particular reference to the case of parabolic layers.
